When XL Industries first got in touch, they were interested in our full-service R&D tax credit support, where we handle the entire claim from start to finish based on team interviews. But our team had a better idea – we advised that the Tax Cloud platform would actually be a better fit for their project size. They were happy to discover a solution that matched their needs and came with lower fees too.
The claim came together quickly, with just a couple of rounds of feedback to make sure everything met HMRC's standards. Brieuc Troadec, who managed the project, said "it was my first time doing it and I thought the process was quite straightforward".
Our technical reviewers and tax analysts were mostly happy with XL Industries' projects but wanted some extra detail on specific technological uncertainties to make sure everything was up to HMRC's standards. The XL Industries team was happy to fill in the gaps, noting that "the Tax Cloud platform is very efficient and the explanations on it are quite clear".
Submission went smoothly, with an Advance Notification Form, the Additional Information Form, and submission through the company's Corporation Tax return. We also submitted the full technical report and costing analysis alongside, just to be sure the claim was as robust as possible.
Then came the curveball: we got a letter from HMRC saying they wanted to do a compliance check on the 2023 R&D claim. This is pretty common for first-time claims – HMRC just wants to verify everything's legitimate. HMRC's Compliance Team was satisfied with the R&D details but wanted to see more evidence of the work itself, including timelines and contemporaneous documentation.
Tax Cloud stands behind every claim submitted through our platform. We jumped on HMRC's questions right away, providing additional evidence of the work, proof of costs, and timesheet examples. Our team walked XL Industries through gathering the right evidence, then pulled it all together into a comprehensive response to HMRC. HMRC was convinced the claim was valid, and XL Industries got their closure notice.
About the enquiry, Mr Troadec said the experience was great: "I didn't think you would take responsibility for answering to HMRC which reassured me a lot".
Tax Cloud’s fees are straightforward; there’s no hidden costs. Tax Cloud delivered on what we needed and is very good at supporting a small business and explaining the procedure. Most importantly to me, Tax Cloud supported us in an HMRC enquiry.
